Cathode App Reviews

I fell in love with a terminal

And only because of Cathode, its not only a great SSH client, it offers cool customizations and you feel the love which was put in creating it. It is worth every penny! Thank you ?

so great

great ssh client. everything you need. Id like to import my .ssh/config.

Its look awesome but:

I dont have a mac... Please make no server mode I mean, i want to just type anything, no commands :/ I just want to make 8-bit ascii art .-.

The most awesome retro SSH client

This app is probably the coolest app on my iPad and I have a ton of apps. The author needs to do a better job with keywords because I never came across it all these years of searching "ssh" or "telnet" or "retro computer" etc. This app uses modern graphics to give you that 1970s or 1980s CRT look. It is such an awesome experience. Just buy a $30 Raspberry Pi and ssh to it via your iPad and Bluetooth keyboard. I love the Cyan color and BigInJapan font. Makes me feel like a hacker in "Aliens." You can adjust the display glow for each screen character, zoom the font sizes, even introduce screen curvature, flicker, static, etc. if you like. No need to buy a real CRT monitor and hassle with it to get a retro feel. This app had better keep compatibility through iOS 10 and beyond! (Author, check your App Store keywords! Youre losing out on purchases).

Switching apps logs you out

There has been no update in over a year and a half. This app doesnt know how to operate in the background. If you switch apps then switch back to Cathode it has logged you out and whatever you had running is no longer running. Pretty worthless. I have switched to a different terminal emulator.

"Nostalgia" ruins an otherwise promising app

I dont know why I expected to be able to turn off that butt ugly IBM system 34 CRT emulation. Alas, it is not possible. If all you want is to give a nod to the days when we had to put up with eye fatiguing slow screen draws, image retention and green phosphor, then this is the app for you. If like me, however, you are looking for a reasonably priced and readable terminal app to manage a remote system from your iPhone or iPad, this is not the droid you are looking for. A total waste of $4.99

It is not convenient to use.

Long time not updated. The keyboard is not customized to input special signs such as dash line. The colors of prompt line cannot be changed. The fonts are not good.

Made my iPad much more useful

As a command line (vim, zsh, etc.) user, Cathode lets me use my iPad to do real work. I keep my computer running as a server and use Cathode to SSH into it. With some help from Dropbox, Cathode lets me use my iPad Pro 9.7" as my only computing device. I have so far written a bunch of code in Cathode with the Smart Keyboard, and havent had too many problems. I like the retro look. Ive toned it down a lot, leaving only some glow, burn-in, and scanlines, and it is very pretty. I have a few minor annoyances. 1. Smart Keyboard support isnt perfect. For example, Cathode sometimes captures all the keyboards inputs when I leave the app, leaving me unable to use the keyboard in other apps. I have to restart my iPad to fix this. 2. I wish the color options were more comprehensive. Ideally, I would want to be able to import an iTerm theme and use those colors. I again stress that these are minor annoyances. This is an incredibly useful app.

Love the look

But please update so iOS doesnt warn me about slowing my phone. And please make typing a pipe | easier. Maybe "fn" could be a pipe | when the keyboard is alpha and "fn" when its numeric?

Saves usernames and passwords?

As a sysadmin, I cant imagine any SSH app that wont let me "always prompt" for username and/or admin, let alone a $5 app?! I so miss iSSH since it became abandonware... I may be wrong, but no word from support on how to actually do this, but I see no settings and if it cant, then its eye candy junk and not a real SSH client of any real use. FAIL.

No ssh keyfile support

Fun but ssh auth should be implemented

Must Have

The best CLI !!!

Like it very much

I like cathode very much to quickly access all my servers. For my servers I prefer very strong passwords and its a pain to type them any time Im connecting, so I saved them. But I would really like to protect them using touch id on the new iPad, so I could get the best of both worlds - security and usability.

The Coolest SSH App Ever!

Since issh is gone i simply use cathode. Its working perfectly stable and looks old fashion.

rather funny than productive

The app is rather funny. It does emulate a cathode tube quite well. Personall I dig making it in the old orange. But do realize that it is also advertised as a shh client. But there are no extra key functions to be found if an external keyboard is hooked to the pad. So this does render it completely useless for any type of production.

Best ssh Client

Best ssh Client

Watching system.log has never looked so cool! :P

Absolute love the retro look when running Cathode on my iPad with (tail -f /var/log/system.log) or "top" :P Awesome work guys. I’ve included a few features below that would be great to see in future updates: 1. Text Editor - Include a simple text editor mode (perhaps linking to Dropbox text files) for functionality when ssh is not available. 2. Cathode Sounds - Include a sub menu for sounds (rather than just a toggle) for parity with the OS X version. I personally much prefer "Schlik" rather than "Dot" on OS X for writing and prefer no sound when scrolling. The iOS version doesn’t give any options here. 3. Shared/Synced preferences/presets with OS X version via iCloud. 4. Choose reflection photo - Allow to choose from camera roll or take a new photo via camera for reflection (perhaps allow live front camera warped reflection based on curvature option etc)

Awesome terminal app! Cool retro effects.

A must have for those of us who still live within the terminal.

Please add Telnet support!

Some public MUD servers use telnet instead of ssh, so this app is plenty useless in this case :(((

Pretty close to OS X version

Please, make support for different symbols, for example cyrillic like in OS X version. Allow to customize sounds, allow to add sounds via iTunes in the app box to make sound customizable. Thanks
